“My name is Simon Stephenson, I make a range of decorative items for the home and garden from locally grown soft woods. I specialise in producing bespoke, hand-made log planters.
I started making the planters when my wife saw a picture of one that her American friend had in her garden. She demanded I make her one… and two years later I am trying to make a business from it!
Each planter is unique, hand carved and made to each customers’ own specifications, finished using an axe and chisel. I apply varnish to the cut faces of each piece, which enhances the wood’s grain and helps to ensure longer-life. The planters also feature drainage holes and a large planting area to allow the plants to flourish. Each piece can be made with the bark left on, for a more natural, rustic look or with it removed and the whole log varnished – these look lovely in a conservatory or porch.
My primary focus is quality. I feel a sense of great pride when a customer sees their log planter for the first time and smiles. I often have them sending me pictures of their planters in situ and through the cycle of the plants in them. I smile again, and think, I made that!
I have recently branched out in to making table centres, wine stands, decorations and cheeseboards. They are varnished or treated with Danish oil and are ideal for use in the home. I also make quirky Noughts and Crosses games for the kids (and bigger kids).
If you want it, I will endeavour to bring your ideas to life – All you need to do is tell me or show me (if you have a picture for inspiration), I love to try my hand at new things and always welcome a challenge.
I am conveniently located mid-way between Norwich and Peterborough in the coastal town of Kings Lynn. I am less than five miles away from Sandringham.
Each log that I use is sustainably sourced from a managed wood. I also cater for weddings and commercial premises.”
